Broth and Its Benefits

Broth is an often under-rated superfood, and the perfect Fall core-warmer. At Green Heart Juice, we offer two types of broths. First is our traditional Bone Broth – prepared simply with organic, local, grass fed, humanely raised beef/chicken bones. Second is our Immunity Broth – a vegan alternative prepared with a basic broth starter (onion, celery and bayleaf) and several types of ethically harvested and locally grown mushrooms including chaga, reishi, lion’s mane, oyster, turkey tail as well as seaweed varieties including arame, wakame, and kombu. Read on to learn about just a few of the many benefits of broth

Benefits of Bone Broth

Collagen: We simmer bones, cartilage, and tissues into our bone broths for the highest amount of nutrients.  Tissues and bones contain collagen, and cooking collagen turns it to gelatin, which provides the body with amino acids – the building blocks of proteins. Collagen is also a well-known nutrient for skin health.

Vitamins & Minerals: Bone marrow is rich in an abundance of nutrients such as iron, vitamins A and K, fatty acids, selenium, zinc, and manganese.

Protein: Drinking bone broth or making a simple soup is a great way to add more protein to the diet and feel more satisfied without over-consuming your daily calorie requirement.

Better Sleep: The amino acids in bone broth may promote better sleep in some people. A 2015 study in the journal Neuropsychopharmacology reports that the amino acid glycine is a safe therapeutic option to improve sleep.  People who take glycine before going to sleep may feel that they sleep better and have less fatigue during the following day. For these people, drinking bone broth with a simple dinner may help provide this glycine.

Benefits of Immunity Broth

Nutritional Benefits: This fungi-powered broth has comparable nutritional benefits to bone broth: helping to improve gut health, boost the immune system and remineralize the body.

Antioxidants: Antioxidants help protect the body from damaging free radicals that can cause conditions like heart disease and cancer. They also protect you against damage from aging and boost your immune system. Mushrooms are rich in the antioxidant called selenium. In fact, they are the best source of the mineral in the produce aisle.

B vitamins: Mushrooms are rich in the B Vitamins riboflavin, niacin, and pantothenic acid. The combination helps protect heart health. Riboflavin is good for red blood cells. Niacin is great for circulation as well as supporting a healthy digestive system and for maintaining healthy skin. Pantothenic acid is good for the nervous system and helps the body make the healthy hormones it needs.

The Power of Seaweed: Seaweed contains Iodine and Tyrosine, which support thyroid function. It also boosts your dose of disease-fighting nutrients, including essential amino acids, antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, and dietary fiber.

It Tastes Great! It’s that simple. Mushroom broth has a wonderful savory, nutty umami flavor.

How to Incorporate Broth into your Diet

You can simply sip the broth by itself! My current favorite additions to add flavor when sipping are: toasted sesame oil, sea salt, chili oil, and chickpea miso.

Or, use it in cooking soups, rice, & veggies.

Our customers have shared some wonderful ideas with us like home-made Phở and vegan tofu soup. Order yours to keep warm and healthy through the winter!
